Marlow Conservation Area, now held by Buckinghamshire Council, was first designated on 10 March 1969 and was extended and revised in 1987, 1991 and 2004. The 2014 Historic Towns Assessment records that the 2004 appraisal added an area of 18th to 20th century development around Beaufort Gardens, as well as Higginson Park and the Court Garden leisure complex. The council's character survey records that in 1991 the boundary along the river was moved to follow the county boundary down the middle of the River Thames, taking in the whole of Lock Island. The survey names red stock brick and tile, interspersed with slate roofs, as the town's predominant building materials. It also says roofline is particularly important in Marlow, and generally varied and irregular. Inside the boundary a house keeps its roof-slope rights: panels may project up to 0.2 metres from the slope and must sit no higher than the highest part of the roof, excluding chimneys. On a varied roofline, a neat block of all-black panels that keeps clear of dormers is the layout we would usually propose.

The 2014 Buckinghamshire Historic Towns Assessment for Marlow counted 165 listed buildings, sixteen at Grade II* and two at Grade I: Marlow Place on Station Road, and Marlow Bridge, William Tierney Clark's suspension bridge. The majority, 92, date from the 18th century and are ranged along West Street and Spittal Street. A further 50 date from the 19th century, mostly along the High Street. The assessment notes that All Saints Church on the Causeway, entirely rebuilt in the mid 19th century, is locally listed rather than on the national register. A listed house is outside the permitted development rights for solar on houses, so panels need planning permission. The council's character survey also notes that listed building consent is required for works to listed buildings in the conservation area. If your home is on West Street, Spittal Street or the High Street, check whether it is listed before booking a survey, so the consents can be planned from the start.

The Environment Agency's £9.5 million Marlow flood alleviation scheme, completed in autumn 2018, reduced flood risk to some 287 properties. The agency says low-lying areas of Marlow are also prone to flooding from groundwater travelling up through the gravels below, so the scheme includes a pumping system that returns groundwater to the Thames. The Historic Towns Assessment puts the town at about 25 metres above Ordnance Datum at the river, rising to about 70 metres at the Barn Farm estate in the north. Buckinghamshire Council's separate Newt Ditch scheme aims to reduce flood risk to around 100 residential and 60 non-residential properties in eastern Marlow. The council lists Dedmere Road, The Croft, Quarrydale Drive and Fieldhouse Lane among the roads there prone to flooding. In its February 2026 update, the council said it was unable to confirm a construction start date. SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks) published a Distribution Network Options Assessment outcomes report in March 2024. It includes a scheme named High Wycombe and Marlow, with indicative postcodes including SL0 to SL9. The scheme addresses thermal overloading of the 132kV circuit between Iver and Denham under second-circuit outage conditions, and the report describes it as increasing capacity in the Amersham area. The proposed option was to reinforce 270 metres of that circuit with a higher-rated cable, releasing up to 62MVA of capacity in the winter season, with delivery planned by 2025/26. That is upstream reinforcement, not a connection for your roof. A home system generating up to and including 16A per phase (3.68kW on a single-phase supply) is notified to the network operator within 28 days of commissioning under G98. Above that, G99 permission is needed before installation, and MCS says adding a battery to solar is likely to take total generation above 16A per phase. ONS Census 2021 figures for the Marlow built-up area, with 14,645 usual residents and a median age of 45, show a mixed housing stock. Of its households, 28.7% live in terraced houses, 27.4% in detached houses, 23.4% in semi-detached houses and 20.4% in flats, maisonettes or apartments. By tenure, 38.1% of households own outright, 32.7% own with a mortgage, loan or shared ownership, 11.8% rent socially and 17.3% rent privately or live rent free. The Historic Towns Assessment describes the town's Victorian and Edwardian villas and artisan terraced housing, and illustrates late Victorian terraces on Newtown Road. On a terrace, the usable roof width and any dormers set the panel count, so we measure the usable roof before promising a system size.
