Hampstead Garden Suburb (NW11), which sits inside the London Borough of Barnet, is the portfolio's strictest solar case: it is covered by an Article 4 Direction that removes permitted-development rights across the estate AND, on top of council planning, is governed by the independent Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust's Scheme of Management (made under the Leasehold Reform Act 1967 by High Court Order dated 17 January 1974, amended 1983). In practice a homeowner there needs prior written approval from the HGS Trust's architectural team for any change to the external envelope — including roof-mounted panels — in addition to a Barnet Council application. A local installer factors both consents into the timeline; a national one typically doesn't know the Trust exists.

Barnet enforces Article 4 directions across roughly ten conservation areas, so even panels that aren't street-facing can lose their automatic permitted-development rights. The ones most relevant to roof installs are Monken Hadley, Totteridge, Mill Hill, Wood Street (High Barnet), Hendon Church End, Hendon 'The Burroughs', Moss Hall Crescent (Finchley), Railway Terraces and the Watling Estate — worth an early check against the address before assuming Permitted Development applies.

The Watling Estate around Burnt Oak (HA8/near the Edgware branch) is a 1920s-30s London County Council 'cottage estate' and a designated conservation area, so its interwar hipped, clay-tiled roofs and uniform street frontages are controlled as a group. This is a distinct roof-and-planning profile from Barnet's private 1930s speculative semis in Whetstone, Mill Hill and Hendon, where the hipped roofs usually offer a usable south-east or south-west plane and in-roof or all-black arrays sit best.

Roof stock splits cleanly by postcode era: the N2/N3/N12 Finchley and East Finchley streets are largely Victorian/Edwardian London-stock-brick terraces where the front slope is often slate and conservation-sensitive but the large rear valley/butterfly roofs take a strong array out of public view; the EN4/EN5 High and New Barnet fringe and the interwar semis carry hipped concrete or clay tile that favours mid-clamp mounting. Aiko all-black panels are the usual specification on the period-property frontages for exactly this reason.

Barnet falls in UK Power Networks' London Power Networks (LPN) distribution area, so grid-connection paperwork (G98 for sub-3.68kW single-phase, G99 for larger or battery-inclusive systems such as SigEnergy or Tesla Powerwall setups) is submitted to UKPN, not a regional DNO.
