Old Hatfield's historic core - the streets around Fore Street, St Etheldreda's Church and the gates of Hatfield House - is a designated conservation area managed by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, where panels on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure fronting a highway are not permitted development and a flat-roof array needs a prior approval decision first; pitched roof-slope panels within the size limits, there and on the surrounding 1950s New Town estates, can still be permitted development unless an Article 4 Direction applies.

Hatfield was designated a New Town in 1948 largely to house the rapidly expanding de Havilland aircraft workforce; the resulting 1950s development-corporation estates (around South Hatfield and The Ryde) have simple, sturdy pitched roofs with generous south-facing aspects deliberately planned into the layout - well suited to a straightforward Aiko array.

Ellenbrook and the neighbouring housing sit on the former de Havilland/BAe aerodrome, which closed in 1994 and was redeveloped from a 1999 masterplan into roughly 2,000 homes plus a business park; these late-1990s-2000s houses typically have modern trussed roofs with interlocking concrete tiles - a different, quicker mounting job than the older New Town stock across town.

Solar Together Hertfordshire - the group-buy run by Hertfordshire County Council with iChoosr and promoted through Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council's Climate Hub - is a genuine local route to panels, but the 2025 registration round has now closed, so homeowners who missed it need a directly-commissioned MCS installer to get a bespoke design rather than a one-size scheme quote.

The University of Hertfordshire's de Havilland Campus opened in 2003 on the ex-airfield (alongside the retained Grade II* listed 1950s flight-test hangar, now a leisure centre), giving the town a large daytime-occupied community of staff and student housing where self-consumption of midday solar generation is naturally high.
