Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Maidenhead?

Usually not for an unlisted house. Panels on a pitched roof are normally permitted development if they protrude no more than 0.2 m from the roof slope and sit no higher than the highest part of the roof, excluding chimneys; on a flat roof they must sit no more than 0.6 m above the highest part. In the Royal Borough's 27 conservation areas the extra restriction covers only walls, balconies or roof enclosures fronting a highway. A flat-roof array in a conservation area needs an application for a prior approval determination before work starts, listed houses are outside Class A permitted development, and the council's published Article 4 Directions do not mention solar panels.
