A practical guide to commercial EV charger installation for Hertfordshire businesses — workplace, fleet, customer-facing and DNO considerations.

Commercial EV Chargers in Hertfordshire: 2026 Business Guide

Commercial EV charger demand from Hertfordshire businesses has grown sharply through 2025-26. Workplace charging, fleet electrification and customer-facing rapid charging are all driving install volumes higher.

Hertfordshire Commercial EV Pricing

Charger TypePowerInstalled Cost
Workplace AC 7kW (single)7 kW£1,800-£2,500
Workplace AC 22kW (3-phase)22 kW£2,800-£4,000

DC Rapid 50kW50 kW£25,000-£40,000
DC Ultra-rapid 150kW+150-350 kW£55,000-£120,000

Pricing includes the charger unit, installation, electrical work, commissioning and OZEV-eligible documentation. Excludes grid connection upgrades where required.

OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme

The OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme provides up to £500 per socket for workplace installations:

  • Maximum 40 sockets across all sites per applicant
  • £500 per socket maximum (raised from £350 on 1 April 2026)
  • Total grant up to £20,000 per applicant
  • Covers up to 75% of purchase and installation cost, inclusive of VAT
  • Scheme runs to 31 March 2027
  • Available to businesses, charities, public sector

Eligibility requires chargers on dedicated workplace parking accessible primarily to staff and fleet vehicles.

DNO Applications in Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire's DNO is UK Power Networks. Connection requirements:

  • Up to 32A per phase (7.4kW single-phase): notify UK Power Networks
  • Above 32A per phase: formal connection application before energisation
  • Larger commercial loads: connection application with possible network reinforcement
  • Multi-charger installations: cumulative load assessment, not per-socket

Note that G98 and G99 are the ENA standards for generation and storage connections, not

for EV charging demand. If you are pairing chargers with solar or a battery on the same site,

that generation side is what G98 and G99 govern, and there the G98 threshold is 16A per phase

(3.68kW) — anything above needs a G99 application.

Typical timelines: 8-16 weeks for G99 applications. UK Power Networks operates one of the more efficient DNO processes in the UK.

Solar-Powered Workplace Charging

The strongest commercial EV economics come from solar-powered charging. A Hertfordshire commercial property with 100kWp solar plus 8 workplace chargers can deliver:

  • 40-60% solar charging in summer
  • 15-30% in winter
  • Significant reduction in commercial electricity costs
  • Marketing and ESG benefit

Combined system costs run £85,000-£115,000 for a typical mid-size business installation.

Fleet Considerations

For commercial fleet operators, key planning considerations:

1. Vehicle utilisation patterns

2. Charging duration and timing

3. Power requirements (AC vs DC)

4. Spatial planning within the depot

5. Future expansion sizing

Phased deployment is typically more cost-effective than full fleet conversion in a single installation.

Choosing a Commercial EV Installer

Verify:

  • OZEV authorisation for grant applications
  • NICEIC commercial accreditation
  • CHAS or SafeContractor accreditation
  • Public liability insurance £5m+
  • Professional indemnity insurance
