Is an EV Charger Covered by the Warm Homes Loan Scheme?

Under the Warm Homes Loan Scheme an EV charger can only be included as an add-on to solar panels or a battery. Here is what that means for a Hertfordshire home.

Is an EV Charger Covered by the Warm Homes Loan Scheme?

The short answer

Only as an add-on. Under the Warm Homes Loan Scheme rules (version 3, September 2026), an EV charger is eligible only when it is installed alongside solar panels or a home battery. A charger on its own cannot be financed through the scheme. If you want a car charger and you are already thinking about solar or a battery, the scheme can cover all three in one loan, subject to the lender's own checks.

Sola UK does not offer finance, arrange loans or act as a credit broker. You choose a lender from the GOV.UK lender list and apply to them; we provide the MCS installation quote. Our Warm Homes Loan Scheme page explains how the process fits together.

What the scheme covers, and what it does not

ItemCovered by a Warm Homes Loan?
Solar PVYes, up to £15,000
Battery storageYes, up to £15,000
EV chargerOnly as an add-on to solar or a battery
InsulationNo
Air-to-air heat pumpNot yet (MCS cannot certify it yet)

The caps come from sections 4.13 to 4.19 of the scheme rules. Rates and terms are set by each lender: some loans are interest-free and some are not, and the government's aim is rates up to 5 percentage points lower than an ordinary loan.

Why the rules work this way

The scheme exists to pay for home energy upgrades, and the car charger only counts when it is part of one. Pairing a charger with solar or a battery means the car can be charged from your own generation or from cheaper stored electricity, which is the point of the upgrade. That is also why the charger has no stand-alone cap in the rules.

Other help with the cost of a charger

Separate from the loan, government chargepoint grants of up to £500 are available for renters and flat owners with private off-street parking, and for households with on-street parking using a cross-pavement solution. These grants run until 31 March 2027. There is no grant for owner-occupiers of a house with a driveway. You cannot use a Warm Homes loan and other government funding to pay for the same item, so a charger part-funded by a grant cannot also go on the loan.

How it works in practice

1. Ask for a survey and a written quote that lists the solar or battery system and the charger as separate lines. Our EV charger installation service and home battery storage pages show what we fit.

2. Take the quote to a lender from the GOV.UK list. Compare rates; they differ.

3. Once the lender approves the loan, the installation goes ahead and the solar or battery system is registered with MCS.

Home solar panels and batteries are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, so the quote you take to a lender is the VAT-free price.

Stay safe

The government and lenders never cold-call to sell Warm Homes Loans or charge a fee to apply. If anyone asks for a fee to unlock a loan or a grant, walk away.
