Can I install solar panels in Hertford's conservation area?

Usually yes, including on a roof slope facing the street. S.I. 2026/896 came into force on 27 August 2026. Since then, the conservation area restriction for houses in Part 14 Class A covers a wall, balcony or roof enclosure which fronts a highway, not roof slopes. Panels must not protrude more than 0.2 m from the slope or sit above the highest part of the roof. A flat-roof array in the conservation area needs a prior approval application before work starts, and listed houses fall outside Class A. An Article 4 Direction could also remove rights on particular properties, so check your address with East Herts first.
