FAQ| Hertford

Can I go off-grid with solar in Hertford?

Going fully off-grid is rarely practical because winter generation is low. PVGIS models a south-facing 4.5 kWp system in Hertford at about 161 kWh in December against about 563 kWh in July, so a grid connection covers the winter shortfall. A battery lets you use more of your own daytime generation in the evening and reduces how much you buy from the grid. Staying connected also lets an MCS-certified system earn Smart Export Guarantee payments for surplus power, for example 12p per kWh on the variable Outgoing Octopus tariff.
